Mental wellness walk and talk

Be the one to make a difference - stepping forward and reaching out can help save lives. Be a lifeline to those who are struggling and tell them they are not alone.

MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. --

To help spread awareness on the importance of mental health, the 22nd Medical Group held a mental health walk and talk this week.

Mental Health Airmen hosted the campaign from Sept. 24 to Sept. 28 to get Airmen to focus on their mental well-being by taking a walk and having a personal discussion.

“It is imperative that each of us take time to reflect and know ourselves, learn our limits and vulnerabilities, identify when we need help, and have the courage to seek help for ourselves or intervene with fellow Airmen in distress when needed,” said Chief Master Sgt. Jaime L. Capps, 22nd Air Refueling Wing interim command chief.

Mental-wellness breaks can help Airmen release stress anytime, whether they are at work or just taking an afternoon stroll with a friend.

“Taking 15 to 20 minutes to walk around with one of your peers and talking about your stressors not only helps you connect, but it also promotes endorphins, which make you feel good about yourself,” said Senior Airman Marisa Campos, a mental health technician with the 22nd MDG.

By taking advantage of these walk and talks, Airmen had the opportunity to help their mental-wellness and be good wingmen to other Airmen.

“We are all vulnerable to becoming stressed and overwhelmed, which can quickly build up to create problems in both our military and personal lives,” said Capps. “Take care of yourself and be there for each other.”
