Nationally, April is observed as Sexual Assault Awareness Month as a way to raise awareness about and to promote prevention of sexual violence through special events and public education.

The Department of Defense theme for 2008 SAAM is, "Prevent Sexual Assault: Ask. Act. Intervene." It focuses on the ability of every service member, family member, civilian and contractor to prevent sexual assault by taking an active role in looking out for the welfare of others. Research shows that most people have difficulty identifying situations that require intervention. Even if someone knows there is a problem, studies show that no one is likely to act if others do not take the initiative to respond. The misperception in thinking is 'someone else will stop this so I shouldn't get involved.' We need to ask ourselves, "Wouldn't we want someone to step forward and protect our loved ones?"

Sexual Assault Response Coordinators, Victim Advocates and commanders are encouraging our community to ask, act and intervene in situations where people may be in jeopardy. This is especially important when alcohol is involved. Taking a stance against potential perpetrators of sexual assault can make a difference. Creating an environment of mutual respect and assistance is key to prevention.

There are several activities scheduled for the month of April for Sexual Assault Awareness Month including an information booth to be held at the Base Exchange on April 4, internet safety information at the Family Festival of Fun April 19, displays throughout base, and Gate Days April 4 and 11. Team McConnell members will be handing out prevention materials at base entrance points. The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office will be hosting an open house on April 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Bldg 750, Suite. 214. We encourage McConnell members to learn more about the issue of sexual assault and what people can do to prevent it by participating in local SAAM activities.
