MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- The 22nd Air Refueling Wing is creating connections between service members and the local community with the “Home Away From Home” program.
McConnell was chosen to be one of five bases to participate in a beta test for the new initiative, which originated at the U.S. Air Force Academy. The program often aims to provide a sense of community, comfort, and support by connecting participants with local family hosts.
“As a freshman at the academy, I benefited greatly from the longstanding sponsorship program designed to give cadets a place away from the strict protocol of a service academy,” said Lt. Col. Melissa Jamison, 22nd Force Support Squadron commander. “When I had a day pass to depart the campus, my sponsor family ensured that I had a
comfortable environment to rest and thrive in. Their spaghetti dinners still bring a smile to my face!”
This unique opportunity allows for families and service members to gain new perspectives and ultimately build lasting relationships.
“Through this program, participants are matched based on assessments that identify shared interests, lifestyles, and preferences,” said Alex Rector, 22nd ARW community readiness consultant. “Whether it's game nights, local sports or exploring Wichita’s attractions, they will decide together how and when to connect with your service member.”
In addition to the assessment, participating families are required to pass a background check before being accepted into the program. This ensures a safe environment for Airmen looking to participate.
“I really look forward to our McConnell Airmen experiencing an opportunity like this to get out of their dormitories and connect with our amazing community here,” Jamison said. “I am truly appreciative of the families willing to open their hearth and hearts to our Airmen. For those who are away from home for the first time with families in different
time zones, it means so much and will help transition to military life as we support our great nation.”
