344th ARS Airman earns spotlight performer

MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- As a spotlight performer, individuals are chosen by leadership for demonstrating one or more of the 22nd ARW commander's intents: Foster a culture of excellence ... Develop the next generation of leaders ... Set and achieve goals.

Senior Airman Steven Mertens, 344th Air Refueling Squadron executive assistant boom operator, was selected as the spotlight performer for the week of July 16 to July 20, 2012.

Mertens is responsible for refueling aircraft as a boom operator, and recently returned from a deployment where he was also responsible for providing transport, air support and search and rescue support. He was named the 344th ARS Airman of the Quarter for second quarter, 2012.

"Mertens exemplifies what every Airman should strive to be," said Lt. Col. Travis Edwards, 344th ARS commander . "He is honest, dedicated and steps up to the challenge at every opportunity."

Mertens has been in the Air Force for almost four years and has been stationed at McConnell since July, 2009. Some of his hobbies include fishing, shooting at the range, playing video games and running.

Who is the most positive influence in your life and why?
The most positive influence in my life is my dad. He taught me to always work hard and strive to be the best.

If you could give advice to a new Airman, what would it be and why?
I would tell them to enjoy their time as an Airman and take advantage of the great opportunities that are available to them.

What is one goal that you have already accomplished, or would like to accomplish, during your Air Force career?
I would like to earn my bachelors degree and begin work on a masters.

Where is the most interesting place you have traveled and why do you feel that way?
The most interesting ploace I have traveld to is Spain. It is a very beautiful country and has a very interesting history and culture.

If you had the opportunity to meet anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
I would like to meet the members of the special forces team that took out Osama Bin Laden, just so I could shake their hands and say thank you.
