Information you should know for potential government shutdown.

In the event of another government shutdown at midnight tonight, it is important to be prepared for all possibilities.

Despite the many unknowns during a shutdown, Team McConnell encourages everyone to know what a shutdown means to government employees, members that will be impacted and where to find information.

Here is an overview of three categories of government civilian employees and information you should know in the event a shutdown occurs.

During a government shutdown, civilian government employees fall into one of three categories: excepted, non-excepted and exempt.

Excepted employees will report to work during furlough in an unpaid status

Non-excepted employees are furloughed similar to a leave-without-pay status.

Exempt employees are typically funded with multi-year appropriated funds or other non-appropriated funds, so they are not impacted by the furlough and report to work as normal.

For members of Team McConnell, employee’s category code can be obtained by contacting the Civilian Personnel Office at (316) 759-4353.

All employees and their supervisors are encouraged to stay informed on where Congress is in the process. Additionally, it is important to check the Office of Personnel Management site for the latest information. OPM is the official source for information.

For more official information on furlough, visit https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/furlough-guidance.

Team McConnell will share information from OPM as it becomes available via McConnell Facebook page and official website.

Military personnel, including active duty and reserve component personnel on federal orders, will continue to carry out their duties in the fullest extent to achieve critical mission accomplishment.

Should a shutdown furlough be ordered, civilian employees must report at the beginning of their next normal duty day to receive instructions and conduct an orderly shutdown of operations. Civilian employees on their Regular Day Off (RDO) or Alternate Work Schedule (AWS) should report the following business day to commence shutdown.

When the budget has passed (or continuing resolution has been extended), furloughed employees are required to report to work or request leave in accordance with leave procedures.  Impacted employees will be contacted by their supervisor for return reporting instructions.
