McConnell Air Force Base will be conducting a controlled maintenance burn on the airfield from approximately 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday in preparation for the Frontiers in Flight Open House and Air Show on September 8 and 9.

The 22nd Air Refueling Wing Safety, 22nd Civil Engineering Squadron’s fire department, and Airfield Management will be working together to quickly and safely control the burn of grass fields along the airfield.

Tora! Tora! Tora!, one of the show’s 15 performers, will be using pyrotechnics and explosives as part of their performance, which will create a wall of fire between the crowd and the runway.

McConnell airspace will be closed to all incoming and outgoing air traffic the Friday prior to the burn through Monday.
