Summer is upon us once again. That means swimming, tubing and other water activities are in full bloom.

Before enjoying such activities one should consider these water safety tips.

"Using a buddy system while swimming is a good safety practice," says Mark Erpelding, 22nd Air Refueling Wing, ground safety manager. "Another good safety practice is to swim in a designated swimming area supervised by a lifeguard."

Mr. Erpelding has also provided the following water safety tips from the Red Cross Web site, www.redcross.org/take-a-class/program-highlights/swimming, to make your summer safe.

The first good swimming safety procedure is to learn how to swim. Until you are proficient in swimming, stay in the water less than chest deep.

When arriving at designated swimming areas, read and obey all rules and posted signs. Be knowledgeable of the water environment, such as depth changes and obstructions.

Do not mix alcohol with swimming. Alcohol impairs your judgment, balance and coordination and affects your swimming skills. Also watch out for being tired or receiving to much sun.

Swimming is a great activity for summer time fun, but always be mindful of these water safety tips.
