As it gets further into the summer, pet owners should ensure their pets are in top-shape and receive everything needed to be in the best health possible to enjoy more summers together.

Whether staying on base or going camping for vacation, it is a good idea to get flea and tick deterrence for pets.

"If you're going camping, you must have your pet on some flea and tick preventative," said Army Staff Sgt. Debbie McGregory-Russ, McConnell Veterinary Clinic veterinary assistant. "There are a lot of chances for a dog or cat to catch something like those if they're out in the woods."

The clinic is offering several types of flea and tick protection for both cats and dogs. The treatments come in different forms, ranging from chewable pills to topical ointments to fit individual pets' needs.

Itching and irritation are not the only things owners need to worry about. There are many other chances for pets to catch other illnesses or diseases while out and about, even at the local kennel while one's family is on vacation warns Dr. Erin Hiskett, McConnell Veterinary Clinic veterinarian.  The clinic can also diagnose conditions and prescribe treatment to help prevent health issues such as heartworms or kennel cough.

All owners are also reminded to keep their pets cool and hydrated during periods of intense heat.

"Providing your pets with fresh water and shade is one of the most important things you can do this time of year," said Hiskett. "A cool spot and at least one fresh bowl of water a day can prevent many problems."
