Team McConnell Celebrates Independence Day Published June 29, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Katrina M. Brisbin 22nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- On July 4, 1776, the 13 original colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. Each year on the Fourth of July, McConnell celebrates this historic event along with the rest of the nation. Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. Everyone has their own way and special meaning as to why they celebrate. During the holiday, families and neighborhoods gather to have a picnic or barbecue, set-off fireworks and enjoy each other's company. "For those of us serving in the armed forces, it is easy to find a personal meaning for our nation's birthday," said Staff Sgt Eric Frantz, 22nd Operation Support Squadron consolidated squadron operations center assistant NCO in charge. "Although many people think of the holiday as an excuse to light fireworks, I think of it as exercising the many freedoms we as Americans cherish." Although there are no official functions scheduled, Team McConnell members are invited to celebrate the holiday by walking in Derby's Annual 4th of July Parade, Derby, Kan. This year the parade is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at Panther Stadium. While the rest of the nation is celebrating with picnics, parades and other displays of patriotism, McConnell's deployed Airmen continue on with their daily routines. "Celebrating while deployed is different from celebrating stateside," said Senior Airman Keith McCormick, 376th Expeditionary Maintenance Group instrument and flight control systems journeyman, "due to the fact you're deployed and working 12-plus hours a day with very limited time off if any. You still have duties to perform and deadlines that must be made." McCormick is currently deployed to Southeast Asia. Typically deployed members are not given the day off or given time to celebrate. Airmen must find their own way to commemorate the holiday. "Celebrating the Fourth of July while deployed is in my opinion one of the best things to do," said Staff Sgt. Gary Pike, 340th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron aviation resource management NCO in charge. "A lot of people at home station don't truly understand the meaning of the day. I love what I do. I love being in the military. I even chose the Fourth of July to reenlist because I am a very patriotic person." Pike is currently deployed to Southwest Asia. Whether stateside or deployed, Airmen are reminded to celebrate Independence Day with safety, pride and excitement.
