McConnell participates in ATSEP inspection Published May 5, 2010 By Senior Airman Abigail Klein 22nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- After a meticulous four-day inspection from Air Mobility Command inspectors, the 22nd Operations Support Squadron was rated an overall "Excellent" for the Air Traffic System Evaluation Program. The purpose of the ATSEP is to evaluate the quality, adequacy and safety of air traffic system supporting an Air Force base, and is conducted every two to three years. This encompasses, air traffic control, air space procedures, the airfield and the organizations that support the airfield. From April 25 to 30 an ATSEP team inspected Airmen from the 22nd OSS, 22nd Civil Engineering Squadron and 22nd Communications Squadron on their compliance with executive orders, Department of Defense directives, Air Force and major command instructions in 810 checklist items. At the ATSEP out-brief held at the 344th Air Refueling Squadron auditorium here April 30, the 22nd Air Refueling Wing commander addressed Team McConnell on the 22nd OSS's ratings, and acknowledged the Airmen's performance during the inspection and their continuing efforts to ensure McConnell is a Ready Base. "The results of this inspection mean that we are on the right path and the overall impressions of the inspectors were positive," said Col. James Crowhurst, 22nd Air Refueling Wing commander. "The inspectors found a few areas that we need to concentrate our efforts on, and we'll strive to improve upon our performance." In addition to Colonel Crowhurst's accolades, Lt. Col. Doug Ware, AMC headquarters ATSEP team chief, commented on McConnell's ability to work with its civilian counterparts, including two commercial airports located within five miles of the base. "The complex flying environment and close proximity of the airports poses some unique challenges, but McConnell is successfully integrating the needs of both military and civil aviation," he said. The inspectors also noted the benefits of this relationship. With 63 KC-135 Stratotankers assigned, McConnell hosts the world's largest KC-135 fleet. In 2009, controllers here assisted with more than 39,000 flights. The overall excellent grade means organizations and air traffic system components of McConnell provide excellent service and support that promote and sustain safe and efficient air traffic operations for both the military and civilian flying community. Teamwork and a winning attitude were prevalent in this cohesive environment that integrates military, industry and general aviation requirements. "There's an outstanding rapport and relationship that Team McConnell has established with the surrounding community, that not only benefits McConnell but also the local area," he said.
