Family advocacy offers October classes Published Oct. 8, 2009 By Alisa A. Norlin McConnell Family Advocacy Program outreach manager MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Additionally, through July 2010, the Air Force is celebrating the Year of the Air Force Family. In recognition of these observances, the McConnell Family Advocacy Program is offering courses to enrich and strengthen military families. Below are descriptions and dates of upcoming classes. The Relationship and Marital Enhancement Seminar is for married and unmarried couples. It is designed to help couples enrich their relationships and is offered in various formats. Both parties in the relationship are required to attend. The eight-hour seminar is broken into four two-hour, weekly sessions. The next class begins Oct. 14 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. 1-2-3 Magic and Common Sense Parenting classes are designed for parents who have children ages 2 to 12. The class shows parents how to be consistent and firm when setting rules and boundaries. Ideally, both parents should attend, however; it's understood this is not always possible. The class is taught in two, two-hour, sessions. The next class is Oct. 15 from 2:20 to 4:30 p.m. Common Sense Parenting is a class that provides parents with skills to build upon. It is designed for parents of children ages 6 to 18. It focuses disciplining children by using their ability to reason and make good choices. It consists of six, two-hour sessions. The next session of classes begins Oct. 15 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Anger Management classes are also available. These classes address anger and stress management and are an option for those who sometimes feel stress is taking over their lives. The classes run in four-week sessions. Classes are Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and sessions begin the first Wednesday of each month. Interested military members, family members, civilians and contractors should call 759-5768 for more information and to sign up for classes. People can also call to offer ideas on class topics. The McConnell Family Advocacy Program's goal is to meet the base community's needs.
