The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played a free concert to a crowd on the flightline here, May 26.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt band formed in southern California in the spring of 1966. The band started as a hippie jug-band and eventually paved the way in country rock.

A local business sponsored the event as a way to say "thank you" to military personnel and their families for all that they do.

Local and on-base sponsors donated the food for the event. They provided pizza, cookies, popcorn and sandwiches for the attendees. Outdoor Recreation supplied several displays including bouncy castles, wave runners and camping trailers. Team McConnell opened a static KC-135 Stratotanker for all to explore.

"We had about 1200 to 1500 people show up for this event," said Fe Vorderlandwehr, 22nd Force Support Squadron. "We had to make a last minute change of location due to the weather, but it was still a success."

Active duty, guard, reserve, retirees, civilians and their family members were invited to the show.
