Having a new baby is an exciting time for young parents. It's a time filled with new experiences and challenges. Of course, new experiences mean new questions that need to be answered. As dentists, we are often asked, "So, when should I take my baby for his first visit to the dentist?"

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has a simple slogan: "First visit by first birthday." There are several reasons why this is a good guideline. By age one, almost all children will have at least one tooth in the mouth and parents will naturally be wondering how to take care of baby's teeth. Parents are also probably wondering if everything looks normal in their baby's mouth.

This initial dental visit is helpful for parents because the dentist can give valuable instructions on how to care for their infant's baby teeth. Prevention of dental disease is much easier and less traumatic for kids than dealing with problems once they arise. It's also simple, once parents know what to do. These instructions will help prevent tooth decay from nursing or bottles and will teach parents what foods help develop strong teeth. Parents should also be told how to clean their baby's teeth. Armed with this knowledge, it will be much easier to keep dental decay away.

First visits are also very important for your child as well. It is an opportunity for them to start getting accustomed to the atmosphere of a dental clinic. As your child returns for subsequent checkups it will be less overwhelming and confusing. Your child will be grateful you got them started on the right track for a healthy smile.
