Airman’s Attic holds school supply giveaway Published July 31, 2008 By Airman Justin Shelton 22nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- The Airman's Attic and the Airman and Family Readiness Center are hosting the last week of a two-week annual event in which school supplies are provided to personnel and dependents base wide. "The AFRC has been in charge of coordinating the school supplies giveaway for years," said Bill Luzier, 22nd Air Refueling Wing Airman and Family Readiness Center readiness consultant. The Airman's Attic started giving away bags of supplies, July 21. The AFRC consults school supply lists for all grades from the Derby school system. Supplies are available and free of charge to any active-duty member who is currently attending college, and for any school-age children of active-duty members in the ranks of E-5 and below. "We gave away 194 bags last week," said Mr. Luzier. All of the bags are labeled for each grade level, and have different amounts and kinds of supplies. The supplies are broad and include things such as pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, glue and even tissues. The supplies are provided mainly through outside donations. Individuals can donate supplies and or money to the AFRC year round and both will be held in storage until the time of the annual school supply giveaway. Normally, there is an organization either on base or affiliated with the base that provides funding for the program. Even though the program only lasts for two weeks, a small surplus of supplies is normally left unclaimed. "Even though we have the two-week period as the established time frame, we try to accommodate everyone who is in need with supplies," said Mr. Luzier. The Airman's Attic has a limited window of operation. It is only open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information or to collect supplies call 316-759-3740.
