Before grabbing the lawn mower, Mark Erpelding, 22nd Air Refueling Wing, ground safety, would like people to consider these safety tips from University of Arkansas division of agriculture.

· People should refer to their operator's manuals; they explain how to safely and properly use a lawn mower.

· Train other operators, so they understand how the mower works. Observe them until they can handle the mower safely.

· Dress properly. Put on close-fitting clothes and wear sturdy, nonslip shoes while mowing.

· Take care of lawn equipment, keep it clean and check if often for safety hazards and maintenance needs. Have lawn mowers annually inspected by an experienced service person.

· Before mowing, go over a lawn carefully. Remove tree limbs, stones, toys and anything the lawn mower blade might pick up and throw. Rocks, glass and any other objects can be hurled at speeds above 170 miles per hour and be thrown 50 feet or more, which can cause series injuries and death.

· Do not fill gas tanks while the engine is running. Fuel up outdoors, and wait for the engine to cool before refueling. Whip up spills after fueling and store gas canisters outside the house and away from any heat sources.

· Check guards and shields. Make sure all safety devices are in place before operating mower.

· The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that each year more than 110,000 people are seriously injured by lawn mower accidents. So, take a few minutes to review safety procedures before operating a mower this season.
