Keep safety on the forefront this holiday Published Nov. 21, 2007 MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- As the holidays are just around the corner please keep in mind of your personal safety, the safety of your family and your wingmen. Take a moment to be reminded of some safety tips this holiday. · As cold weather approaches, please wear your cold weather gear when performing outside jobs. Also, wear personal cold weather gear when on personal time to ensure good health. · Operational Risk Management- As the year winds down and as work comes to a steady pace you might get the itch to be spontaneous and have some well deserved fun. As long as you're safe in your extracurricular activities and any dangerous activities are cleared through your safety supervisor, you should be in good shape! · Driving Under the Influence/Driving while Intoxicatied- The holidays are a time for get-togethers and fun; to some that fun may include drinking. If you are drinking over the holidays, please remain safe in doing so and before you think about drinking and driving consider your options...there's the wingman system or designated driver, also Airmen Against Drunk Driving and if all else fails, call your supervisor. Just remember if you're going to drink, have a plan! · Cooking is a big part of the holidays. One must remember to take certain precautions while cooking. Make sure you remember to turn your oven off when it's not in use, and always keep small children away from the stove/oven while cooking. · Most people will be decorating their homes for the holidays; so please remember to maintain safe outlets and piggybacking electrical cords is a "no". If you plan on using a ladder to put up lights, please use ORM and possibly a buddy to make sure you don't fall while doing so. · As cold weather ensues, make sure your vehicle is prepared for any winter travels; check the oil and your brakes/tires. Also, if you're driving and the weather conditions turn into something a little dangerous, pull over and wait for better driving conditions. · Weather isn't the only thing you have to worry about when driving during the holidays. You also have to worry about the "holiday traffic". Please be defensive in your driving and make sure you pay attention when in congested traffic.
