The youths at McConnell will not be running barefoot through steamy, hot streets of water being blasted from fire hydrants. However, there will be many activities in store for them at the end of this summer on base. The 22nd Services Squadron is hosting this year's Air Mobility Command's Match-Up block party scheduled for Aug. 25 from 5-11 p.m. at the outdoor pool and pavilion area. "The block party is a perfect way for the 22nd Services Squadron to show appreciation for everything our community does for us," said Toni Blevins from McConnell's Outdoor Recreation center. Team McConnell members can enjoy free food and many activities for McConnell youths to participate in. Not only will there be a chance to receive Match-Up game pieces, there will be canoe races, soap box derby cars on display, a caricature artist, children's activities, inflatables and more. "There will be a watermelon seed spitting contest and a dance contest for all to participate with various types of music," said Steve Gonzales, 22nd Services Squadron. Not only does participating in this event bring a community together it gives McConnell members a chance to earn money for the base. "The past two years the pool admission was free, and the family exercise room was renovated- the possibilities are endless," said Toni. The Match-Up competition will come to an end Aug.31. McConnell is currently in 7th place in a friendly race against other AMC bases. There's still time for people to enter game pieces, celebrate the end of the summer and see what the services squadron has to offer.
