2007 Open House “Air Power in the Air Capital” promises spectacular show Published July 5, 2007 By Tech. Sgt.Genevieve Morris 22nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- The 2007 McConnell Open House is scheduled for July 14-15. The event is free and open to the public. Bus transportation will start at 9:30 a.m., and doors will open to the displays at 10 a.m. The aerial performances will start at noon. "This year's open house at McConnell promises to be one of the best events of the summer in the Midwest," said Maj. Robert Hoeritz, this year's Open House director. The United States Navy Blue Angels and the Army Golden Knights are scheduled as the headlining acts for this year's event. The show will start with opening ceremonies at approximately 11 a.m. both days, with a low-pass down the flight-line by the Kansas Patriot Guard. There will also be a variety of vintage war birds, military aircraft static displays, a Virtual Army Experience display, a children's play area, souvenirs, food and much, much more. "With all of the thrilling aerial demonstrations, the numerous simulators, including flight and Army combat, and multiple ground displays, including NASA and the Museum of World Treasures, and a totally awesome kids' zone featuring a 36- foot tall space shuttle, you would be crazy not to take advantage of this free event," Major Hoeritz said. Transportation: On the days of the Open House, base housing residents can catch a bus at the youth center behind base housing. All other ID card holders, including volunteers and event workers, should enter through the main gate and proceed to the Robert J. Dole Community Center for pickup. Busses will run a regular schedule from one side to the other throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday. Parking: There are no fees for entry or parking. Guests should proceed to the intersection of East MacArthur and Oliver streets for parking. Oliver Street will be closed to traffic between 31st and MacArthur streets. Guests will be directed to Open House parking. Handicap parking can be accessed near the McConnell AFB West Gate entrance located off South George Washington Boulevard. Practice show and picnic: The practice show and free picnic for Team McConnell members, Open House participants and performers will be July 13 at noon at the Dole Community Center. The Blue Angels and Golden Knights and other various acts will practice their routines for the Open House during the picnic. Come and meet the performers; enjoy free food, and listen to great music by a premier Wichita-area band. Helpful hints for enjoying the show: · Shade is limited. Please bring sunscreen and hats for protection from the sun. · Wear comfortable shoes and clothing and expect to walk more than normal. · Guests are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. There will be several vendors selling beverages, but visitors are also encouraged to bring bottled water in clear, sealed, plastic bottles. · Smoking will only be authorized in designated areas. · Know the variety of symptoms associated with heat-related illnesses. If you feel dehydrated or faint, notify someone immediately. Symptoms may come on gradually and can include headache, weakness, nausea, lightheadedness, muscle aches or cramps and agitation.
