CDC offers water safety tips Published July 5, 2007 By Erin Lewis 22nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- With the temperatures rising, people seem to be drawn toward local water holes that are in close proximately of their homes. Lakes, pools, spas and rivers offer people the chance to cool off on a scorching hot summer day, however, deaths due to drowning are estimated at almost 400,000 per year worldwide according to the Center for Disease Control. Before people head to the water this summer, they should be familiar with the watering hole to which they are going. It may play a part in preventing water-related accidents. Choosing a location with good water quality where the water is clear from debris is important. To prevent accidents: · Never leave children unsupervised in or around water. · Fit children with proper floatation devices, such as life jackets or vests, even if they swim well. · Never consume alcohol before or during water activities. · Be conscious of local weather conditions. · Do not swim alone. · Wear proper clothing. · Wear sunscreen. · Shower before and after water activities.
