Sgt. James Smith, 22nd Air Refueling Wing chaplain assistant, and his six-year-old daughter, Kyleigh, by giving them a Year of the Air Force Family Spotlight award. The award is an Airman and Family Readiness Center initiative to honor families that provide outstanding support to Team McConnell. Chaplains (Maj.) Boyd Short and (Capt.) Robert Borger nominated the single parent family for the award. According to their nomination package, Sergeant Smith manages all the support requirements for chapel programs. Recently, his behind-the-scenes efforts led to the success of programs such as the Rock Springs 4-H annual wing retreats, the dormitory Thanksgiving meal, ongoing safeTALK courses, holiday caroling in base housing and unit and airfield chaplain visits during recent exercises and daily operations. In the last year, Sergeant Smith returned from a deployment to Southwest Asia, while balancing the responsibilities of being a caring and conscientious single parent. His goal is to help launch a program here at McConnell to meet the needs of single parents in the community.
