A safety minute with the commander: Running and walking on base Published April 29, 2009 By Col. James C. Vechery 22nd Air Refueling Wing commander MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- With spring finally here, there has been an increase in running and walking around the base. That is great to see. While health and fitness are essential to operational readiness and personal wellbeing, I am personally concerned for the safety of each and every member of Team McConnell. I encourage you to take advantage of the trails at the Colonel Krueger Recreation Area or the base running track. However, if you choose to exercise near the roadways, please use sidewalks when available. If there are no sidewalks, ensure that you are not using the roadways during peak traffic periods. As a reminder, headphones are prohibited while exercising on or near roadways.
