Students say yes to YES Published July 24, 2015 By Aubrey LeGue 22nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- Summer is in full swing, and with it, for most high school students comes summer jobs and fun in the sun. For these students, earning money for college is key. The Youth Employment Skills Program helps students earn up to $1,500 towards college tuition and books. Jobs offered include, but are not limited to: the arts and crafts center, the public affairs office and the library. Air Force Aid Society and the Air Force Family Programs Flight started YES in 1995, and it began at McConnell in 2012. "Air Force active duty dependents entering their freshman year through senior year in high school can participate in YES," said James Jolliff, youth programs director. "Students earn $6 per hour and work up to 250 hours maximum." The program doesn't just help the dependent; it helps future dependents as well because $2 goes into the program for future dependents, while $6 goes to the current dependent's college fund. Students interested in the YES program should fill out an application at the youth center. Applicants will need their active duty sponsor's signature before returning the application to the youth center where it will be sent in for approval. After approval, applicants will be matched with an office on base that has been chosen for the YES program and matches their interests. The establishments chosen are ones that are in need of work hands. For more information about the program, contact the youth center at DSN 743-4070 or commercial at (316) 759- 4070.
