MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. --
Larry Hatteberg, retired KAKE TV anchor, kicked off the first week of #theSUMof15, May 27, at the Robert J. Dole Community Center Ballroom, here when he spoke to more than 60 Team McConnell members.
Every Wednesday, for the next 14 weeks, a new speaker is scheduled to share with Team McConnell members what has made them successful, what has gotten them to the positions they hold and the places they've been.
"The community leaders are speaking to our whole base populace, active duty, guard, reserve, dependents, spouses, civilians and contractors," said Staff Sgt. Brandon Tull, 22nd Medical Support Squadron NCO in charge of medical maintenance. "Whoever can break away during their lunch time, noon to 1 p.m. in Dole Center Ballroom are welcome to come."
Hatteberg, has 51 years of experience in photojournalism and broadcasting, kicked off the series by sharing stories about his career and the importance for following an individual's passion.
"He was able to give us a lot of information in an anecdotal kind of way," said Senior Airman Kevin Falting, 22nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief. "He spoke of the development of an idea and the context of how that came to be. Through a story, you understand why it was beneficial and how to use it in your life. That's what I took from it."
The stories Hatteberg shared brought out a lot of emotion from the audience.
"Some people were literally moved to tears," said Senior Master Sgt. David Smith, 22nd Force Support Squadron career assistance advisor. "Every briefer will be different, every briefer can be impactful to someone. My hope is that everyone will be able to take something positive and apply it to their lives."
