The McConnell Officers' Spouses' Charity Association distributed more than $25,000 worth of scholarships to 18 military and federal employee's dependents during a scholarship dinner at the Larkspur Bar and Bistro in Wichita, Kansas, May 1, 2015.

"It is our goal to assist dependents in continuing their education and create a bond between our military and civilian community," said Heather Rainey, MOSC scholarship awards chairperson.

The scholastic awards are intended to benefit high school students and military spouses planning to further their education. Teachers were also recognized from the surrounding communities for their willingness to implement programs that benefit not only our military dependent children but all children.

Rainey said she can't describe how it feels to be a member of the MOSC and have an opportunity to help those that may not have been able to afford secondary education without assistance.

"The recipients are people who have truly experienced the world in a different way," said Rainey. "They are military spouses and children who have had to say good-bye to a spouse, or a parent or two and assumed leadership roles in their families and communities."

Rainey went onto explain how she feels humble by the unsung heroes.

"It's a wonderful feeling to be able to shake their hand, tell them how proud we are of them, and that we completely support them," said Rainey.
