Cadets from the Emerald City Composite Squadron of the Wichita Civil Air Patrol visited the McConnell KC-135 Stratotanker flight simulator March 3, 2014.

Capt. Mike Cox, 349th Air Refueling Squadron executive officer, 1st Lt. Nathanial Beer, 384th ARS pilot, and 1st Lt. Ryan Cobb, 384th ARS navigator, are all members of CAP and were the officers in charge of showing the cadets the flight simulator.

"It was through CAP I really discovered the military and joined Air Force ROTC at Metropolitan State University of Denver," said Beer. "While pursuing my Air Force commission, I still participated in the program as a senior member and instructor."

The cadets also had the opportunity to use the KC-135 Boom Operator Weapon System Trainer as well, where they practiced refueling their aircraft of preference in the simulated boom pod.

The visit was an opportunity to show the cadets Team McConnell's air refueling mission. This is important because it's a chance for Airmen to give back to the community.

The CAP offers activities ranging from search and rescue, orientation flights in CAP aircraft and also the opportunity to participate in unique events.

"CAP has been a huge influence on my life, helping me pursue my interest in aviation and pushing me onto the military career path," said Beer.

Beer said the opportunity to fly a full scale simulator is another benefit afforded to cadets participating in CAP and it can also help them develop and grow as community leaders and potential future service members.
