The 22nd Civil Engineer Squadron (15-1) defeated the 22nd Maintenance Squadron (10-5) in a two-game series for the intramural basketball championship Jan. 20, 2014 at McConnell Air Force Base, Kan.

MXS came back in the second half of game one to win it in overtime. The victory forced a winner-take-all game where CE stepped up defensively en route to a 56-44 triumph.

"I knew if we played defense like we're capable of playing, we would create offense," said Staff Sgt. Orlando Wright, 22nd CES Prime BEEF manager. "No one can stop us if we play good defense. That has been the story of our season all year."

CE didn't play great defense in the first game. MXS raced back, erasing a 14-point deficit, and tied the game, sending it into overtime.

Airman Austin Reeves, 22nd MXS aerospace propulsion journeyman, sank a 3-point shot with 43.7 seconds left in regulation to make it a one possession game and then tied the game with two late free throws.

After the overtime victory by MXS, there was a brief intermission for the teams to prepare and plan for the last game of their season.

During the second game, CE took over. Airman 1st Class Andre Davis, 22nd CES heavy equipment dirt boy, earned MVP honors by scoring 19 points, which led CE to their second straight base championship.

"I'm proud of my guys and I'm proud of our team," said Davis. "This was definitely a team win. Our defense won the game for us."
