Members of Team McConnell showcased their singing abilities during this year's McConnell Icon competition Aug. 24, 2013, at the Robert J. Dole Community Center.

The top three contestants won cash prizes, up to 500 dollars and the first place winner will progress to the next round at the Air Mobility Command level.

For the second consecutive year in a row, Tech. Sgt. Doug Boren, 384th Air Refueling Squadron instructor boom operator, took home the first place prize and will perform again at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

"I chose to perform Michael Buble's rendition of 'Fever'", said Boren. "I like the way it allows me interact with the audience, and it has a great vocal range as well."

Boren will have a chance to join Tops and Blues, the Air Force premier traveling entertainment unit, as he competes with winners from other AMC bases.

"It was very competitive and entertaining to watch." said Senior Airman Francis Sparks, 22nd Comptroller Squadron customer service technician. "The Air Force giving opportunities like this are great; it's a morale boost for people enjoying the show and also the performers because it gives them a chance to see their peers and coworkers supporting them."

The event is influenced by the hit TV show American Idol. All AMC bases have hosted a local competition during July or August.

Boren's win, so far, may not be a personal milestone, but he finds himself satisfied in having the opportunity to sing for others.

"Seeing an audience respond to a performance," said Boren, "plus being able to give an audience the ability to forget about normal life for any period of time is why I perform."
