Residents of McConnell's base housing neighborhood Southwind are now able to compete for the "Yard of the Month."

The program will run from May to September 2012.

Due to housing construction and unfavorable conditions, the program did not run during summer 2011. We wanted all families to be able to win, said Shanna Dempsey, 22nd Civil Engineer Squadron capital asset management chief.

Families awarded the yard of the month will be recognized with a sign placed in the yard. The sign will remain until the next month's winner is selected.

Prizes may vary from month to month. The May winner received $50 Lowes gift card, free meals at Burger King, a planter from the Exchange and free movie passes, said Dempsey.

As base housing residents, families are responsible for maintaining their assigned housing unit in an acceptable appearance. Units that are properly maintained will be judged.

The following guidelines are suggested by McConnell's Housing Management Office to make a residence eligible for nomination:
  • Water only during designated days and times to prevent disqualification.
  • Mow and rake grass to present a well-manicured appearance.
  • Edge and remove dead grass from sidewalks, driveways and street curbs.
  • Ensure shrubs are well-shaped and trimmed to between three and four feet. Shrubs should be maintained in such a manner as to prevent rubbing against the house.
  • Keep carport, patio and entryway neat in appearance. These areas should not be used for storage of appliances, household goods, boxes, work benches and other clutter.
  • Outside pets should be kept in a clean and sanitary condition. Pets should be leashed or properly controlled in a fenced area so as not to interfere with neighbor's use of sidewalks or access their own back yard
  • For supplies, check with the self-help store first. They may have Bermuda grass seed, topsoil, pine straw and various other items for use. The Air Force is not obligated to provide these items, but if they are available, unnecessary out-of-pocket expenses can be saved. If the self-help store does not have what is needed to maintain a yard, these items can be purchased by the resident at a local area supply source.
