Ronald Lafosse 22nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- With the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, some Team McConnell members may be tempted to use fireworks off base. Fireworks can provide hours of entertainment; however, people need to be safe when handling, igniting and storing fireworks. Here are some fireworks safety tips provide by Staff Sgt. Justin Carruthers, 22nd Civil Engineering Squadron, fire department. Never allow children to handle, play with or ignite fireworks, only adults need to handle them. Fireworks can be great fun for the family, but remember to keep your family safe. Fireworks should be used only by responsible individuals who are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Being impaired can increase the possibilities of misuse and injury to you or others. Select a non-flammable, level hard surface to ensure stability for launch. Make sure the area is open and free of debris. It is good practice to have an accessible fire extinguisher or water supply nearby in case of emergencies. Be cautious of wind conditions; a strong wind can change the path of fireworks. Plan ahead and keep buildings out of the range of the fireworks. Use common sense when using fireworks, read directions, cautions, labels and warnings before igniting any fireworks. Always follow state and local laws while in possession and use of fireworks. Remember, while fireworks are allowed to be transported and stored on base, people are not allow utilizing them on base.
