The base is more than halfway toward the Combined Federal Campaign goal. With help from base events such as the 5K fun run and the Mission Operations Squadron Chili cook-off, the CFC thermometer, posted at the main gate entrance, is slowly rising to meet the target set at $115,000.

As Kansas days are becoming cooler, chili warmed the bellies of McConnell members who participated at the CFC MOS Chili Cook-off, Oct 24.

The Cook-off lured attendees from across the base with inviting smells and mouth watering chili entries. Six different crock pots of steaming hot chili covered the counter space at the MOS breakroom, Bldg. 1170.

One chili entry had spaghetti added to its special ingredients. All pots, with different tastes and consistencies, where judged on flavor and presentation. Participating customers had the option of side servings of cheeses and homemade breads and to garnish their dishes.

Maj. Robert Triplett, 22nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Capt. Benjamin Boehm, 22nd MOS, and Chief Master Sgt. Steven Herdler, 22nd Maintenance Squadron, judged the fundraiser.

After bellies were full and content, leaving little chili left behind, the judges voted on the first place chili entry. The honor of first place was awarded to Staff Sgt. Chad Morfey, 22nd MOS.

"All of the entries where really good," said Captain Boehm. "The winning chili had great flavor and was a bit spicy."

Sergeant Morfey received a cookbook on behalf of Freedom First Credit Union.

His wife Kristin, cooked the winning chili. He shared a secret ingredient with curious minds.

"My wife added cocoa to the recipe," said Sergeant Morfey.

The MOS Chili Cook-off raised $154 throughout the afternoon. The money, along with money from CFC 5K fun run Oct. 19, has been added to the growing amount.

A total of 169 runners participated in the fun run raising $1,740. This year's campaign has been extended to Nov. 15.

People can still donate by contacting their squadron key worker who can provide them with the campaign booklet and pledge cards. Other team McConnell members who would like to receive more information about the CFC, call Captain Alblinger at 759-6417.
