Registration open for free NFL football camp

MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. --  Military dependants ages 7-18 may register online for the free Iron Sharpens Iron football camp beginning May 2.

McConnell is partnering with the McDonald Association Collective Collaboration to hold this event, which will feature several NFL players from teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The football camp is scheduled for June 18 and will be held at the Derby High School football field.

The day of the event, children will be split into two groups, ages 7-13 and ages 14-18. The younger group will play in the morning, with registration beginning at 8 a.m., and the older group will play in the afternoon, beginning registration at 11 a.m. Both groups will take a group photo, play football for two hours and receive an hour of mentoring from the NFL players.

The camp will also be open to children in the local community; those who want to participate can register starting May 9.

With the attendance goal for the event being 500-750 children, the majority of participants will be children from Wichita, Derby, Andover and surrounding areas, said Tech. Sgt. Michael Johns, 22nd Force Support Squadron NCO in charge of the First Term Airmen Center and event coordinator.

"The reason we wanted to include the community is because of all the things they do for us," said Senior Master Sgt. David Smith, 22nd Force Support Squadron career assistance advisor and event coordinator.
