The chapel hosted a chili lunch for more than 150 Airmen in the 22nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron in Hangar 1107 here.

The 'chapel chili crew,' consisting of Chaplain (Capt.) Asa Chung, 22nd Air Refueling Wing protestant chaplain, and volunteers provided the chili lunch as an opportunity for Airmen to sit down and enjoy a meal with them as well as build bridges to show that the chaplains are friendly, approachable and care about helping others spiritually and emotionally.

"The significance of building bridges to me is that perhaps in a moment of challenge or desperation, an Airman would feel more comfortable to approach the chapel for help," said Chung.

Chung has an ability to make others feel good by spending time and sharing some laughs, which help Airmen become healthier emotionally and spiritually.

"I have had more positive feedback from the young men and women in our squadron that have had interactions with [Chung]," said Master Sgt. Alan Gage, 22nd AMXS assistant first sergeant. "Whether it was that they had serious major issues in their life or based off of when he comes out for moral welfare events."

Chung's company is what set the scene, but the chicken chili and soft cornbread did not disappoint.

"The chili was great, and it is so nice for them to cook and spend some time with us," said Tech. Sgt. Julio Cruz, 931st Air Refueling Group crew chief. "Coming here to show that they care about us is good motivation."

Spirits were lifted and laughter was heard all around while spending time with Chung and the volunteers, after coming inside on a chilly day to enjoy a different kind of chili.

"The visit helped morale and built bridges to ultimately let members know that there are approachable members, such as a chaplain, that they can go to for absolute privacy to discuss things in their lives and become healthier members of the military," said Chung.

Chaplains provide non-reportable counseling, which means that no matter what they are told they legally cannot disclose any information, so if a service member needs someone to talk to they can get the help without fear of repercussions.
