Members of the 22nd Security Forces Squadron teamed up with the Derby Police Department during the National Night Out event at Rock City Rapids, Derby, Aug. 5

National Night Out is a crime- and drug- prevention event begun in 1983, which involves local citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 10,000 communities and military bases world-wide.

It was designed to heighten crime- and drug- prevention awareness by generating support for local anticrime programs and strengthening police-community partnerships while sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

"I think it's a really good program," said Master Sgt. Derrick Slaton, 22nd Security Forces Squadron. "It gives the military a chance to interact with local law enforcement."

"It gives a chance for people to see what we have to offer and can do," added Master Police Officer Matt Liston, Derby Police Department.

The 22nd Security Forces Squadron showed off a High-Mobility, Multipurpose, Wheeled Vehicle, gave a demonstration with military working dogs, and displayed weapons like the M4 carbine, M9 pistol, and M240 and M249 machine guns.

"I can't believe this. It's nice," said Ray Stribling, a Citizen on Patrol volunteer in Derby.
