A modern day ‘Rosie’
In 1942, the phrase “Rosie the Riveter” was used to portray a tireless assembly line worker doing her part to help the American war effort. Rosie later went on to become an icon for feminism and inspired a social movement that increased the number of American women in the workforce from 12 million in 1940 to 20 million in 1944. In the 22nd Air Refueling Wing, close to one percent of the service members who carry out daily missions are women. A brief look into the lives of six women at McConnell showcases the contrast between their less-than-glamorous careers and their ability to maintain femininity.
