U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jared Martrano, 22nd Maintenance Squadron aircraft structural maintenance specialist, demonstrates a wheel refurbishment stand developed by McConnell Air Force Base maintainers at McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, Aug. 24, 2026. The stand uses interchangeable adapters designed for different aircraft wheel sizes and allows technicians to rotate a wheel 360 degrees and completely invert it for improved access and coverage during painting. Once painted, the wheel can be moved to a drying rack without contacting the wet surface, allowing technicians to immediately begin work on another wheel and increasing the number of wheels that can be processed. U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jared Martrano, 22nd Maintenance Squadron aircraft structural maintenance specialist, simulates painting a KC-46A Pegasus wheel while wearing personal protective equipment at McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, Aug. 24, 2026. Aircraft coatings and primers can contain hazardous substances such as hexavalent chromium, making respiratory protection, gloves, eye protection and protective clothing essential for limiting exposure during painting operations. Environmental Protection Agency regulations and other exposure-control measures help reduce the release of toxic substances into the atmosphere and protect personnel working with hazardous aircraft coatings.
