While many at McConnell are logging off their computers, several McConnell squadrons and units run 24-hour operations to ensure Team McConnell’s war-fighting mission is accomplished. The 22nd Air Refueling Wing is comprised of four groups, 18 squadrons and a wing staff responsible who help carry out the wing’s mission. Senior Airman Keegan Jarvis, 22nd Security Forces Squadron installation entry control guard, observes oncoming traffic at McConnell’s main gate, June 2, 2010, McConnell Air Force Base, Kan. Entry control guards are the first line of defense for the installation and the first contact visitors have with Team McConnell. The 22nd SFS provides security 24-hours a day, seven days a week for more than 14,000 personnel and assets up including the more than 8,000 vehicles that pass though entry control points daily. The 22nd SFS members work eight-hour shifts, not including two additional hours before and after shift change to issue, clean and return weapons and equipment. The 22nd SFS has approximately 160 active-duty members, more than 20 guardsmen and reservists on active duty orders and more than 15 civilians who provide security and patrol for McConnell. Members from Team McConnell’s 22nd Maintenance Group and 22nd Operations Group work around the clock to ensure that McConnell Air Force Base has operational aircraft that are mission ready. Maintenance personnel work with the Guardsmen and Reservists assigned to the base. McConnell flies more than 3,250 sortie hours a month. McConnell operators use machines like Braille Lite to write quick messages for themselves and others. New View Oklahoma, formerly the Oklahoma League for the Blind, currently holds the contract for the McConnell operators. According to the contract, 75 percent of the base operators must be legally blind. Operators must be able to type and know basic computer skills to work as a switchboard technician. Chisholm Trail Inn dining facility is manned 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to provide quality nutritious food for Team McConnell Airmen. Approximately 300 to 400 Team McConnell members eat at the Chisholm Trail Inn dining facility daily, with 100 to 200 extra members during drill weekend. Chisholm Trail Inn orders more than $45,000 worth of food for meals a month. McConnell’s dining facility offers a special birthday meal every quarter and holiday meals for meal card and dorm members.
