Air Force Senior Airmen Mike Malarsie and Bradley Smith pose for a photo during their Afghanistan deployment, shortly before the enemy forces IED attack Jan. 3 that seriously injured Airman Malarsie and mortally wounded Airman Smith. The two tactical airlift control Airmen were assigned to the 10th Air Support Operations Squadron at Ft. Riley, Kansas. This elite Air Force unit provides combat-mission-ready TACP’s for combat maneuver units of the 1st Infantry Division and 1st Armored Division, essentially acting as the battlefield liaison between ground forces and aircraft weapon systems. These two Airmen served as a two-man team, working in an Army ground unit and directing close air support firepower toward enemy targets on the ground. (Courtesy photo)
