The Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD) has confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated child between the ages of 5 and 10 years old on May 7, 2025. Officials are currently working to notify individuals who may have come into contact with the virus and identify the source.

SCHD recently issued a public notice for anyone who visited ‘Carnicerías El Güero No. 1 Grocery Store’, located at 524 W. 21st St. N. in Wichita on April 29, 2025, between 6:30-10 p.m. Those who visited the store during that timeframe are urged to monitor for any symptoms through May 20.

“We urge residents to review their vaccination status and consult their healthcare provider if they have symptoms such as fever, cough, or rash,” said Adrienne Byrne, SCHD director. “Measles remains one of the most contagious diseases, with the potential for serious complications.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), measles, a respiratory disease, is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Measles can also be transmitted simply by breathing near an infected individual and may linger for up to two hours after the infected person has left. If left untreated it may cause pneumonia, swelling of the brain and even death, in severe cases, especially in children under the age of 5, and adults over the age of 20.

Team McConnell is highly encouraged to review their vaccination status and keep alert for symptoms of the virus. Symptoms typically appear 7-14 days after exposure, and include high fevers, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, tiny white spots with bluish-white centers inside the mouth (Koplik spots) and a blotchy rash that spreads from the head downward.

“We are working swiftly to identify the source of exposure and notify anyone who may have been exposed,” Byrne said. “The best way to prevent measles is by getting vaccinated. Protect children by making sure they have the MMR vaccine.”

As of May 7, a total of 48 confirmed cases have been reported in Kansas. McConnell Airmen and their family members who believe they may have been exposed or are experiencing symptoms should contact the 22nd Medical Group at (316)759-6300.
