McConnell will be joining several other Department of Defense installations by transitioning to Military Health System Genesis, a new electronic health record that will provide enhanced, secure technology to manage health information, beginning April 24.

“Genesis will provide uniformity across all DOD bases so that patients will have the exact same experience and the exact same records available at every clinic they visit,” said Maj. Chase Ballinger, 22nd Medical Support Squadron pharmacy flight commander. “Additionally, Genesis will modernize the way that providers and ancillary staff document and treat patients within the clinic.”

The new system will provide a single health record for service members, veterans, retirees and their families.

“Through MHS GENESIS, the patients will have access to a Patient Portal,” said 2nd Lt. McKayla Marquardt, 22nd Medical Group TRICARE operations and patient administration flight commander. “This will function very similar to our current TRICARE Online.”

Marquardt explained that the system will allow patients to view their health records, send secure messages to their provider care team and request prescription renewals.

“Only visits that occur at the Military Treatment Facility [after] MHS GENESIS [is] live will be viewable in the new Patient Portal,” said Marquardt. “That is very important for our patients to realize when looking for previous notes.”

She continued to share that TRICARE Online will remain accessible to view past medical records. It was also mentioned that the TRICARE portal will remain available for prescription refills and medication orders that were created before the implementation of MHS Genesis for up to one year.

According to Health.mil, the system integrates inpatient and outpatient solutions and streamlines medical and dental information across the continuum of care into one system. Additionally, patients and healthcare companies will be able to directly pay medical bills via GENESIS.

“The implementation may initially cause operations to be slower until staff become accustomed to it, but in the long run, Genesis will greatly improve the way that medicine is practiced within our clinic,” said Ballinger.
